Kelsey J – Line Drawn with Emotional Robot

I came across an article about a robot in Japan designed as a companion with the ability to recognize feelings. However, this company is morally against using their robots as sex robots, like the ones we discussed in class, making users sign a contract assuring that they will not engage in sexual activity with the robot.

However, people created an app that gives the robot breasts receptive to touch against the companies wishes.

Clearly, as more of this technology is created, people are taking sides on the “real” versus “fake” intimacies debate, and sex robots probably will (and in my opinion, should) remain taboo. Interesting however, that emotional intimacy is the goal of this robot, but physically intimacy is considered a line that can’t be crossed.
